October 2018 - Hero of the Month:
SafeNest is Clark County’s largest and most comprehensive nonprofit dedicated solely to addressing domestic violence. With an unwavering determination to break the pattern of domestic violence, SafeNest provides confidential services to victims, including shelter, counseling, advocacy and prevention. This past year, SafeNest helped families forced to endure displacement and other hardships because of domestic violence by: providing shelter to over 300 victims, assisting over 7,000 victims seeking temporary protection orders and speaking with over 32,000 hotline callers.
For over ten years, SafeNest has partnered with the Las Vegas Harvest Festival Original Art & Craft Show, to collect nonperishable food donations for the agency’s confidential shelter. Thanks to the generosity of over 13,000 patrons, SafeNest's 2018 collaborative initiative with the Harvest Festival, "Welcome Home," collected non-perishable food and paper products to fill the shelter pantry for an entire year. Over the course of the three-day festival, SafeNest’s incredible volunteers devoted well over 60 hours of time to greet festival guests, collect donations, sell festival shopping bags and man the bag check area.
Safenest’s most recent volunteer opportunity, Public Safety 417 (PS 417), is a unique partnership with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Northwest Area Command (NWAC) designed to reduce domestic violence related homicides in our community by providing on-scene, crisis intervention to victims immediately following the domestic violence incident. The program addresses the gap in services to victims between the time officers respond to a call to the time when a victim or survivor connects with SafeNest. PS 417 volunteers work directly with the victim on safety planning, emergency protection orders and education about available SafeNest resources like the 24/7 Crisis Hotline and confidential shelter. SafeNest is currently working with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) to expand PS 417 citywide. Anyone interested in volunteering for PS 417 and SafeNest can find out more at www.safenest.org or call 702-877-0133.
